2008 Vesak Day Chinatown Tour

 

 

2008 Vesak Day Chinatown tour explores the contribution of Buddhism and Buddhist Venerables to the overseas Chinese history of Singapore.

 

 

Singapore Chinatown was the earliest residential area for ethnic Chinese in Singapore and important Chinese institutions were established there.

 

Many of them have remained to this day allowing us to explore the Buddhist history of Singapore Chinatown and its contribution to society.

 

The tour traces the arrival of Chinese migrants to Singapore, their life in Chinatown, how Buddhist organizations addressed the social needs of the time and how they continue to do so.

 

2008 Vesak Day Chinatown tour includes visit to:

 

Thian Hock Keng天福宫)

City God Temple (都城隍庙)

Singapore Chinese Buddhist Association(新加坡中华佛教会)

Kwan-In Welfare Society(观音救苦会 )

Ee Hoe Club (怡和轩)

 

Venerables discussed during the tour includes Venerable Tai Xu 太虚大师 (photo to the right)

Venerable Pu Liang 普亮法师

Venerable Zhuandao 转到和尚

Venerable Rui Yu 瑞于法师

 

The tour is a historical exploration and locates Buddhism within the context of multi racial and multi religious Singapore.

 

It is NOT a religious tour and suitable for people of all races and nationalities.

 

The tour ends with a vegetarian meal at one of the vegetarian restaurants in Singapore Chinatown.


 

Tour Dates: April and May weekdays and weekends

S$50 per person

(Minimum of 12 participants for a group)

Meeting point: outside of Tooth Relic Temple

(along south bridge road)

Nearest MRT: Chinatown MRT

 

Price includes:

  • Group transport by bus

  • Singapore Tourism board licensed tour guide

  • Vegetarian meal in a Chinatown vegetarian restaurant

Tour program is not inclusive of personal accident coverage.

 

The proceeds of the tour will go towards Shan You Counselling Centre (a non-profit organization) to support their operations.
