Chinatownology, Taoism Yahoo by Victor Yue and Master Li is proud to announce the 2nd tour in the “Song of the Song” series. This tour explores the worship of Mazu, the Chinese Sea Goddess.

Mazu Temples dedicated to the Chinese Sea Goddess can be found in almost every Chinese community around the world.  The worship of Mazu began during the Song dynasty and has sustained for more than a thousand years to this day.

Mazu is unique among Taoist deities in the number of titles bestowed by Han Chinese, Mongolian and Manchurian Emperors. Mazu received a total of 36 titles that elevated her status from Ladyship in 1156 to Empress of Heaven in 1872. See list of Mazu titles.

In 2009, Mazu belief and custom was designated as "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Using Thian Hock Keng Temple as our focus point, we introduce the history and culture of Mazu. At the same time, we ask:

Why did the worship of Mazu started during the Song dynasty and not earlier?
What were the political factors that sustained the worship of Mazu over the last thousand years?
How did the roles of Mazu change over time?

As rituals form an important part of Mazu worship, we invite Master Li Guang Ming to explain the rituals in Mazu worship. Master Li is a Singapore based, bilingual, university graduate and finance industry professional turned Taoist Priest.

Meanwhile, Chinatownology is celebrating Vesak by printing a MettaCats note book (S$10 each) to support MettaCat’s work in caring for abused and abandoned animals.  Please give us our support. You can use the notebook to take notes during the tour.
