History of Hu Zhen Long
Hu Zhen Long (胡振隆) was established by a father and son team in 1948. Mr. Hu Teng （胡藤）and his son, Mr. Hu Qing Nian （胡清年）, left Anxi in Fujian province （福建安溪）for Singapore in the 1930s. In 1948, they started the business offering Sesame oil, a native product from where they came from. Their factory and residence was in Jurong Kechil. Business was good and by the 1970s, they began offering Bakkwa (BBQ pork) 肉干.
In 1976, they were relocated to Clementi. By this time, their clientele base increased and they expanded their product range under the brand Hu Zhen Long (胡振隆). The business entered into the second generation when Mr. Roy Hu, son of Mr. Hu Qing Nian （胡清年）succeeded the business. The clientele base continues to expand and now includes tourists especially from Hong Kong who visited the shop for products that they could not find elsewhere.
In 1996, the business branched out to the current location in Chinatown. The additional location was convenient to the tourist who came especially for their products. By this time, the company has established itself as a Bakkwa specialist. At the sametime they continue to expand by offering a wide range of food products under their own label Hu Zhen Long (胡振隆).
The company still offers the Sesame oil that started their business along with the Bakkwa that they are now well known. Other products categories include traditional foodstuff, finger food, sauces, instant coffee and tea.
The décor of the shop is very simple and traditional, wooden shelves and red banners with traditional motifs. Walking into the shop is a nostalgic experience like entering a shop of a bygone era.
As you walk along the shop, you can see the full range of products on display. Products such as preserved mangoes, preserved durian snack, shrimp rolls, pork floss, instant coffee and tea, Chinese sausages, lemon cuttlefish, cuttlefish, anchovies, satay cashew nuts, garlic shrimps, Singapore Laksa Paste, Sambal Blachan…………….
The company history and the changing product range demonstrate how traditional recipes offered a platform for Chinese migrants to develop their entrepreneurship. As their business develops and as the business pass onto the next generation, they continue to develop and respond to changes in consumer tastes and lifestyle preferences while maintaining a traditional touch.
This delicate balance creates the ambience of the shop and the nostalgia feeling as you enter.
